The Ross School District is pleased to announce the conclusion of its search for the District’s next superintendent. Mr. David Rice was chosen from a highly qualified field, following a rigorous selection process. Ross School is located in Ross and serves 360 elementary and middle school learners from Kindergarten through 8th grade. It became a National Blue Ribbon School in 2021 and is also a California Distinguished School.
Mr. Rice has valuable experience with the Ross School and Marin communities. He became the interim superintendent in July 2022. For the four years prior to this appointment, he was the Ross School Middle School Principal and Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Prior to his arrival at the Ross School District, he was an assistant principal at both Mt. Tamalpais and Archie Williams High Schools in Marin. Mr. Rice has been a teacher domestically in Ohio and at Tamalpais Union High School District, and also taught internationally in China. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from St. Bonaventure University in New York and a master’s degree from Touro University.
Trustees Megan Callahan Pavelka and Chris Ericksen coordinated the search effort on behalf of the five member Board of Trustees. "David stood out from a very qualified candidate pool – not only on the basis of his work as our interim superintendent, but also from the tremendous support he has received from Ross School employees, students, parents and the broader community. He embodies our school motto of ‘Heart, Mind and Action,’ ” said Megan Callahan Pavelka, President of the Ross School Board. David Rice responded to the community: "I want to thank the Board of Trustees for their trust in me, and the Ross School staff and community for their unwavering support and encouragement. Most importantly, I want to thank the Ross School students who inspire me every day to put my all into our heart, mind and action work."
Mr. Rice is married, has two children, and lives in Mill Valley. He will begin as the permanent superintendent at Ross School effective March 2023.

Dear Ross School Parents and Community Members,
I have been selected by the Ross School Board of Trustees to conduct a search for the permanent superintendent position (announcement from 11/3 can be found here). By way of introduction, I am a retired school administrator who now works as a consultant, specializing in superintendent searches. I have worked with twenty-two school districts in Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Lake, and Mendocino Counties over the past ten years. Prior to that I was interim Superintendent in the Ross School District from 2011 - 2012. I also conducted your district’s search seven years ago. I know your community and district exceptionally well.
An important first step in the search process is understanding what the community would like to see in the next permanent superintendent. The Board of Trustees would like your input on desired qualifications (i.e., what might be viewed on a resume) as well as personal characteristics that will be important for success as the next leader of the District. Your input will be used to create a profile of an ideal candidate. The more input, the clearer the picture for the Board of Trustees as they guide the selection process.
I’ve created several ways to provide input:
√ Attend a Zoom Informational and Input Session on Monday, December 5th at 6:00pm: Link to Input Meeting
√ Attend an in-person meeting in the Ross School Library on Monday, December 12th at 6:00pm
√ Take an anonymous online survey (beneficial even if you also attend a meeting): Input Survey
√ Provide any additional thoughts to me, including recommendations, questions, and concerns, at any time up to the conclusion of the search via email at MahoneySearches@gmail.com or cell at (707) 953-3434.
Thank you so much for your help with this important process!
